Joining a group

It really helps to have the support of some like-minded people when you are attempting to make life-style changes. The following groups aim to unite the local community in working together to fight climate change and build a sustainable future:

Transition Town Network

Greening Campaign

Other groups that can offer advice and support are:

Global Action Plan - form EcoTeams (6-8 households) who support each other to reduce their impact on the environment and save money.

Carbon Rationing Action Group - form local groups which encourage each other to reduce their carbon footprints.

Community Carbon Reduction Project - make a pledge to move towards the 60% carbon reduction challenge. Lots of zero cost energy saving tips.

There are a number of community exchange networks which boost mutual support, recycling and can save you money too!

LETS - Local Exchange Trading System, a community network which enables you to swap goods and services without the need for money

Time Banking - community network where you can exchange your time and skills on an equal basis. Associated with TimeBank UK which facilitates local volunteer work

Freecycle - matching people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them. See also Freegle

Freelender - borrowing and sharing items with online community. See also Lets All Share and EcoModo

Freeconomy - aim to help reconnect people in their local communities through the simple act of sharing skills, tools and spaces.

BTCV - support a network of community groups which can help you to improve your health and well-being whilst working on practical projects to improve your local environment. Website includes info on Green Gyms, Conservation holidays and Training courses.

If you feel inspired to start a local group, COIN (Climate Outreach and Information Network) have launched a Climate Action Group Toolkit to assist community groups working together on climate change projects. It includes details of how to set up a local action group but existing groups will also find the ideas and information very useful. Visit their website for details of how to receive a free electronic copy of the toolkit and further information on the support they can provide to help put it into action.
