The Greening Campaign is the brain child of Terena Plowright. It started in Petersfield, Hampshire in September 2007 and spread rapidly across a number of Hampshire communities. It is now being trialled in other counties, including West Sussex where it is being supported by West Sussex County Council.
The campaign begins by encouraging households to take a branded information card, which gives them a list of ways to save energy in the home and at work. They select a number of these ideas to put into action and display the card in their front window to indicate their support. The local campaign group work to reinforce the message by film shows, public meetings and displays in shops, libraries, etc. The next step of the campaign is to evaluate its success, by a combination of public surveys and card counts. From this information the annual CO2 cut for the community can be estimated. Having brought local people together, the next phase is to build upon the enthusiasm that has been generated by initiating other projects inspired by the community members.
